When this movie came out in the theaters, I wanted to see it simply for the fact that it had Robin Williams and he played a comedy role in it. Now, I hadn’t heard much about the film except that it was about Robin as a funny man getting elected president. Yesterday I finally decided to give it a chance and rented it on pay per view.
Tom Dobbs (Robin Williams) is a political humorist in the vein of Jon Stewart, Stephen Colbert, and Bill Maher. One day during a Q & A session before a taping of his show, a fan recommends that Tom run for president. Quickly, the word gets around and the support becomes so obvious that Tom and his manger, Jack Menken (Christopher Walken), begin battling their way into the political arena. As the election evolves, a lone programmer at Delacroy, the company that invented the electronic voting machines being used, has found a glitch that inaccurately calculates the results of the election. The programmer, Eleanor Green (Laura Linney), confronts the executives of the company, but is told that she is wrong and that the system works perfectly fine. The company wants to cover up this fact so that their stock price will rise and subsequently everyone will become wealthy. Eleanor goes on a crusade to inform Dobbs and his camp.
That’s the gist of the movie, but of course, it gets very good and turns from a comedy into more of a drama/thriller as Eleanor, trying to inform the new President Elect that the election was a farce, is blocked every step of the way by Delacroy.
I found the movie very good, but I have to admit that I was unprepared for the turn it took about midway through. The comedy aspects dropped off the radar for the most part, but that doesn’t mean it didn’t exploit Robin Williams great acting. Robin shone, like he always does, and proved once again that he’s very well-rounded.
