My mother-in-law has been staying with us since early March (she came down for Dominic and Elvira\u2019s wedding), and it was finally time for her Florida vacation to come to an end. She won\u2019t fly, doesn\u2019t drive, and is getting up there in years, so a solo train ride isn\u2019t happening either. So, driving is the only real option. Here\u2019s a run-down of the trip:<\/p>\n<!-- \/wp:paragraph -->\n\n<!-- wp:paragraph -->\n<p><strong>Wednesday, July 1:<\/strong> Dominic and Elvira picked me up around 5:00pm and dropped me off at the rental car company, which has a branch in the Brandon mall. I got a black Mazda CX50, which is a crossover SUV. For a road trip with three people and a bunch of luggage, it\u2019s decent. After driving it back to the house, we all packed and prepared to set out early the next day.<\/p>\n<!-- \/wp:paragraph -->\n\n<!-- wp:paragraph -->\n<p><strong>Thursday, July 2:<\/strong> We left at 6:00am, stopped and got some coffee and a light breakfast at Dunkin\u2019 Donuts, and were on our way. The trip was planned so we&#8217;d stop and take a break every 4 hours or so. Our first stop was near Jacksonville, FL, the next was Walterboro, SC, and the third was in Benson, NC. The final stop of the day was around 10:00pm at a Tru by Hilton in Ashland, VA.<\/p>\n<!-- \/wp:paragraph -->\n\n<!-- wp:paragraph -->\n<p><strong>Friday, July 3:<\/strong> After the free breakfast at the hotel, we were on the road again by 8:00am. The second leg of the trip was much shorter. The only stop on the road was in Belcamp, MD, then we arrived at my sister-in-law\u2019s house in Ossining, NY around 4:00pm. We ordered pizza for the family and spent the evening relaxing and watching the World Cup on TV.<\/p>\n<!-- \/wp:paragraph -->\n\n<!-- wp:paragraph -->\n<p><strong>Saturday, July 4:<\/strong> Cari woke up early, but I was in bed until 9:00am, exhausted from the trip. I also didn\u2019t sleep well as the bed was much harder than the one at home, and I tossed and turned a lot. My back also got quite stiff.<\/p>\n<!-- \/wp:paragraph -->\n\n<!-- wp:paragraph -->\n<p>We watched the <a href=\"https:\/\/nathansfranks.sfdbrands.com\/en-us\/promotions\/hot-dog-eating-contest\/\" data-type=\"link\" data-id=\"https:\/\/nathansfranks.sfdbrands.com\/en-us\/promotions\/hot-dog-eating-contest\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">2026 Nathan&#8217;s Hot Dog Eating Contest<\/a>, which has been a staple at my house for years, but the NY family hadn&#8217;t really ever experienced it. They were grossed out. Afterward, my sister-in-law&#8217;s husband, Miguel, and I went out to the back patio and started prepping the grill. He got some replacement upper-shelves and new gas burner covers, all of which took some time to swap out. By the way, did I mention that this was in the middle of a heat wave? When we drove through DC the prior day, it was 107\u00b0 F outside. NY wasn&#8217;t that high, but it was still quite hot. I ended up hitting my tolerance level and went inside, leaving Miguel to cook as the family moved a large party speaker to the back yard and cranked it up to (in my opinion) unreasonable levels.<\/p>\n<!-- \/wp:paragraph -->\n\n<!-- wp:paragraph -->\n<p>My nephew has a small (100cc?) dirt bike he was riding around the yard during the cookout. At one point, he parked it and came inside too, suffering from wearing a helmet in the heat. Miguel decided to move the bike by starting it and giving it a little gas so he could walk it up the hill to the garage. When he did this, the glove he was wearing caught on the throttle and the bike took off, dragging him a dozen or so feet across the cement and giving him a decent road rash. He was largely fine after the girls tended to his scrapes and he went back to grilling. I didn&#8217;t know any of this until after the food was done and Cari came in the house with a plate for me.<\/p>\n<!-- \/wp:paragraph -->\n\n<!-- wp:paragraph -->\n<p>A large storm rolled in and everyone took cover inside from the rain and wind gusts. The inclement weather lasted a few hours, but eventually let up around 9:00pm. We watch the Macy&#8217;s fireworks on TV and witnessed the neighbors large sky rockets. Around 10:00pm, we went outside and lit off some stuff of our own with the kids.<\/p>\n<!-- \/wp:paragraph -->\n\n<!-- wp:paragraph -->\n<p><strong>Sunday, July 5:<\/strong> After sleeping in, we all got up and loafed around the house a bit. The entire family (sans Miguel, who was nursing the scrapes) caught a late-afternoon showing of Toy Story 5 at the movie theater, stopped at a local Wal-Mart to get some things, and grabbed dinner at a nearby McDonald&#8217;s.<\/p>\n<!-- \/wp:paragraph -->\n\n<!-- wp:paragraph -->\n<p><strong>Monday, July 6:<\/strong> Miguel decided to head to the doctor to make sure his injuries were not worse than they appeared (they were not), and so I picked him up from the train station in the late morning. We got back to the house and I helped my nephew set up a fresh copy of Windows 11 on a computer he got from a friend.<\/p>\n<!-- \/wp:paragraph -->\n\n<!-- wp:paragraph -->\n<p><strong>Tuesday, July 7:<\/strong> Cari and I returned the rental car and got on a 7:00am flight back to Tampa, and we we back to the house by noon. The rest of the afternoon was filled with unpacking, laundry, and grocery shopping.<\/p>\n<!-- \/wp:paragraph -->\n\n<!-- wp:heading {\"level\":3} -->\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Studio Infrastructure<\/h3>\n<!-- \/wp:heading -->\n\n<!-- wp:paragraph -->\n<p>Since getting the new firewall, things on my server rack have been a mess and it&#8217;s time to rework it. I ordered some parts and will be documenting the entire build soon.<\/p>\n<!-- \/wp:paragraph -->\n\n<!-- wp:paragraph -->\n<p>Over the last couple of years, I&#8217;ve been re-organizing the drawers in my desk by printing out Gridfinity plates and bins, which has resulted in higher density storage and easier to find items. I still have a few more drawers to do, so I decided to start on one today. More info to come.<\/p>\n<!-- \/wp:paragraph -->\n\n<!-- wp:heading {\"level\":3} -->\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Video Games<\/h3>\n<!-- \/wp:heading -->\n\n<!-- wp:paragraph -->\n<p>While prepping the upstairs game room for a new TV and new HDMI switch box, I decided to boot up several game consoles and make sure they were updated. However, I found that my PS3 couldn&#8217;t connect to the Wi-Fi and the controller would only work while connected via a USB cable. After some research, I found that there&#8217;s a chance that the Bluetooth\/Wi-Fi module is bad. Another up-coming project will be to troubleshoot the console and repair it.<\/p>\n<!-- \/wp:paragraph -->\n\n<!-- wp:paragraph -->\n<p>Also while working on the game room, I noticed some of the game cases were broken, so I bought some replacements on Amazon. They arrived today, and when I opened the pack of PS3 cases, I realized the box was full of new, never opened copies of Disney&#8217;s Sing It: Party Hits. I rechecked the Amazon listing, and sure enough they say in the small print that the sale was for new games and that the buyer could throw away the discs and inserts and use the cases for other games. Huh. wp:paragraph -->\n<p>After printing, assembling, and mounting the left-hand unit, the side-cabinet project is now complete.<\/p>\n<!-- \/wp:paragraph -->\n\n<!-- wp:paragraph -->\n<p>I found that the methodology for attaching the mounting buttons to the side of the organizer was very cumbersome, even after making some adjustments to the cabinet design before printing this second unit. I need to spend more time refining this before releasing the designs to the public, as it\u2019s a big point of frustration.<\/p>\n<!-- \/wp:paragraph -->\n\n<!-- wp:paragraph -->\n<p>All-in-all, I\u2019m very happy with the results and the clean look vs. old, ugly, open shelves is a big improvement.<\/p>\n<!-- \/wp:paragraph -->\n\n<!-- wp:heading {\"level\":3} -->\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Retro Computing<\/h3>\n<!-- \/wp:heading -->\n\n<!-- wp:paragraph -->\n<p>As mentioned in a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.chewbode.com\/index.php\/2026\/06\/06\/flopping-and-thrusting\/\" data-type=\"post\" data-id=\"2165\">previous post<\/a>, I obtained and backed up about 200 floppy disks for the ST. I finally spent time going through all the disks, of which there were about 120 that weren\u2019t bad. The data has been dropped on the hard drive of my STE and is roughly cataloged. The only thing left to do is to go through each disk and see if it\u2019s been archived\/preserved on the internet, and if not, spend the time to do so.<\/p>\n<!-- \/wp:paragraph -->\n\n<!-- wp:heading {\"level\":3} -->\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Miscellany<\/h3>\n<!-- \/wp:heading -->\n\n<!-- wp:paragraph -->\n<p>That\u2019s about it for this week. I&#8217;ve spent a bunch of time just doing some boring ol&#8217; house projects the last few days. But, there are comics, video games, and retro things inbound soon. I&#8217;m back to normal now, though.<\/p>\n<!-- \/wp:paragraph -->\n\n<!-- wp:heading {\"level\":3} -->\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Akro-Mils Side Cabinet<\/h3>\n<!-- \/wp:heading -->\n\n<!-- wp:paragraph -->\n<p>Success! After a pretty extensive workout, my Bambu Lab P1P finished printing all of the pieces for my first cabinet. I was able to design all of the parts so they didn&#8217;t require supports, which kept the print time down. The cabinet sections took the longest; about 36 hours of printing. Designing them to not need supports really helped that time be as low as possible.<\/p>\n<!-- \/wp:paragraph -->\n\n<!-- wp:paragraph -->\n<p>Printed parts weren&#8217;t the only things needed. I had some hardware left over from a previous project and I purposefully designed the cabinets to use them. pulling parts from the pile on my workbench. The first step was to test-fit the cabinet sections together and, well, they fit great. After pulling them apart I added a very thin layer of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.3dgloop.com\/shop\/pla-gloop\" data-type=\"link\" data-id=\"https:\/\/www.3dgloop.com\/shop\/pla-gloop\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">PLA Gloop!<\/a> to the tops and bottoms of the sections. They set up within 30 seconds, but I put some weight on them and left them alone for about two hours before continuing.<\/p>\n<!-- \/wp:paragraph -->\n\n<!-- wp:paragraph -->\n<p>Next, I had to fit the magnets into the cabinet doors and the opposing magnets into the front faces of the cabinet sections, making sure the poles were attracting not repelling. Almost all friction-fit into place, however a couple needed a dab of CA glue.<\/p>\n<!-- \/wp:paragraph -->\n\n<!-- wp:paragraph -->\n<p>The biggest challenge was mounting the buttons onto the side of the original Akro-Mils organizer. These are designed to allow the screw to pass through and secure the button to the side of the organizer. The cabinet then has shaped holes that allow it to be pressed against the side of the organizer, and then slowly drop down to lock the cabinet in place. These is typically called Keyhole Slot Hangers, but my interpretation is a bit more complex. It took a while to get them mounted to the side of the organizer and I added the nuts to the screws from the inside of the organizer. Once they were secured, the side cabinet was able to easily slide onto them.<\/p>\n<!-- \/wp:paragraph -->\n\n<!-- wp:paragraph -->\n<p>Lastly, I mounted the shelves, put all of the items in the cabinet, and covered it up. Although the original Droid and it&#8217;s follow-up, Droid II, were released back in the &#8217;90s, there&#8217;s recently been an enhanced version created of the first game by Jamie Hamshere that adds support for the Atari STE hardware as well as provides quality-of-life improvements to the gameplay. All of these are bundled into this boxed release.<\/p>\n<!-- \/wp:paragraph -->\n\n<!-- wp:paragraph -->\n<p>All of the materials for the box have been scanned, so I just need some time to get it into online archives.<\/p>\n<!-- \/wp:paragraph -->\n\n<!-- wp:heading {\"level\":3} -->\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Studio Organization<\/h3>\n<!-- \/wp:heading -->\n\n<!-- wp:paragraph -->\n<p>A while back I took my Akro-Mils parts organizers and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.chewbode.com\/index.php\/2024\/09\/03\/re-organizing-the-organizers\/\" data-type=\"link\" data-id=\"https:\/\/www.chewbode.com\/index.php\/2024\/09\/03\/re-organizing-the-organizers\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">3D printed all new drawers<\/a> for them, vastly increasing the storage density. The next step was to create attachable side cabinets that would augment the storage, allowing me to hide the myriad of bottles (you can see these on the right side of the picture in that previous post).<\/p>\n<!-- \/wp:paragraph -->\n\n<!-- wp:paragraph -->\n<p>After a long hiatus, I&#8217;ve gotten back to this project and it&#8217;s almost done. Everything is fully designed and I&#8217;m about half way through printing everything. The shipment arrived this week. It looks like the majority of the disks are ST-related, with some being Windows\/PC-related. I hooked up my external floppy drive\/Greaseweazle enclosure and imaged the disks to my hard drive. I still need to go through each disk to see their actual contents, and from there, will determine if there&#8217;s anything that needs to be archived online.<\/p>\n<!-- \/wp:paragraph -->\n\n<!-- wp:heading {\"level\":3} -->\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">The Adventures of Johnny Thrust<\/h3>\n<!-- \/wp:heading -->\n\n<!-- wp:paragraph -->\n<p>I&#8217;ve begun working on this once again. Nothing detailed to report at the moment, but I&#8217;ll update you soon.<\/p>\n<!-- \/wp:paragraph -->\n\n<!-- wp:heading {\"level\":3} -->\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Video Games<\/h3>\n<!-- \/wp:heading -->\n\n<!-- wp:paragraph -->\n<p>I&#8217;ve seen a rise over the last few years of independent programmers\/studios making games for the ST. And interestingly, there are some who even make boxed versions of the games with disks, manuals, etc. This intrigued me enough to buy a few recently, even though they were a little pricey. I want to do my part to encourage developers to make boxed releases, especially for the ST.<\/p>\n<!-- \/wp:paragraph -->\n\n<!-- wp:paragraph -->\n<p>I spend VERY little time playing games on my consoles. Even so, I&#8217;ve been a PlayStation Plus subscriber for several years, but have finally deiced it&#8217;s not worth keeping and have cancelled the auto-renewal.<\/p>\n<!-- \/wp:paragraph -->\n\n<!-- wp:paragraph -->\n<p>For those who don&#8217;t know, the service offers up a few games each month that you can add to your library and play anytime. The catch is, those games will disappear if you cancel your PS Plus service. So, you&#8217;re renting. Since I have some time before that list of games goes away, I ran through it to see if there was anything I&#8217;d actually like to purchase.<\/p>\n<!-- \/wp:paragraph -->\n\n<!-- wp:paragraph -->\n<p>The industry has pivoted to this &#8220;you don&#8217;t own your games&#8221; mentality for years, where, if your game relies on online services in any way, and the publisher decides they don&#8217;t want to have those servers online anymore, then the game becomes non-functional. A related issue is if you buy a game digitally from the online store. The publisher is still in control of whether or not you can play the game leading to another &#8220;you bought it, but you don&#8217;t get to use it&#8221; scenario. So, it seems the best way around this is to purchase physical media when you can. I&#8217;ve started grabbing some discs for the PS3 and PS4, even if I purchased it digitally years ago. For some reason, this makes me feel better; like I finally own the game.<\/p>\n<!-- \/wp:paragraph -->\n\n<!-- wp:heading {\"level\":3} -->\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Studio Infrastructure<\/h3>\n<!-- \/wp:heading -->\n\n<!-- wp:paragraph -->\n<p>Over the past few months I&#8217;ve been experiencing severe network congestion in the house and studio. As I was troubleshooting this, I found it was my core 1U, rack-mounted PC that runs pfSense. This has served as my main edge firewall as well as has handled my layer-3 subnet segmentation for a long time. After extensive research, I found that the OS was partially crashing, and that was leading to the congestion. Not a full-on kernel panic, but close.<\/p>\n<!-- \/wp:paragraph -->\n\n<!-- wp:paragraph -->\n<p>So, I spent this past weekend retiring that device and replacing it with a new device that will serve the same purpose.
